Renovation Work Continuing!

The landscapers have completed their work on the garden (aside from mulch).  Thank you Southern Blue Landscaping for donating the stone walkway and all of the mulch!! Now it is up to the volunteer families to help with planting the flower beds.  We have just planted one of the raised beds with bush beans, pole beans and carrots.  The beans should be just about ready for picking when students return to school in September.

A couple of new signs for the garden!

Welcome to Matoaka's Garden!

Welcome to the first blog post for Matoaka's school garden!  Matoaka's garden is undergoing a face lift this summer.  In the past five years we have been gardening in two raised beds.  In order to accommodate more classes, we are expanding the fenced in area to include six raised beds.  The "before" photo is pictured below.

The raised beds are being moved from underneath the pergola.  Instead, the picnic tables will be placed under the pergola.  This will allow a little bit of shade on those very hot days in September, May and June. We will add some vines to grow up the pergola, like Carolina Jessamine and Autumn Clematis.  Throughout the year classes use the picnic tables to eat lunch on sunny days.  Some teachers also bring their classes out to the tables and use them for reading time.  It's also a favorite spot for teachers to eat lunch when they have a break.

Southern Blue Landscaping is performing labor intensive work to create the new look for the garden.  They are installing a new stone path leading in to the garden.

The four benches pictured below were tired and weathered after five years of being out in the garden.  Students and parents helped put a fresh coat of paint in vibrant colors to the benches.  Wow!  What a difference a little paint can make.

Southern Blue is finishing up their work this week.  Our next job is to transplant back all of the perennials that were moved from the site during the renovation.  Stay tuned as we continue on our garden adventure!
